Five things I will not be doing this fall as a stylist.

1. Online shopping. No random purchases out of boredom. Let’s face it, those online purchases are never great. The fits are usually off, the color and fabric are never what you expect, and the quality is always disappointing from these random online brands. Set aside your shopping day to try on and see things in person. You should be picky about the pieces you are adding.

2. Not editing before I shop. We tend to gravitate toward the same things out of habit. Adding another top won’t bring your wardrobe together. It will only give you a new top for one day of wear. If you take time to style your outfits with what you have, you will have a better understanding of what is missing from your wardrobe so that you can create a shopping list to fill in the gaps.

3. Buying pieces that do not fit my style direction. It’s easy to get distracted with so many ads and images on social media showing you a model or celebrity making a basic outfit look so much cooler than it actually is. When you define your personal look and vibe, it’s easier to shop.

4. Skipping second-hand markets and vintage. Do I really need to elaborate? Excellent quality at a fraction of the price for unique pieces no one else will have. This is especially great for designer bags, coats, furs, watches, and jewelry.

5. Not making a shopping plan. If you don’t plan your styling day, you will find yourself in last-minute desperation shopping. That will only lead to settling for whatever is available at the moment and will not allow you time to order the correct size or alter pieces if needed. For fall shopping, the best time to shop is the end of August through October. You want to have the items you need before they sell out and before the cold weather hits.
